     International Paper supports communities in which its employees live and work. The Foundation has awarded grants of more than $37 million since 1995. In 2002, more than half of the Foundation's outlays supported its primary focus: educational endeavors.
     The company has the greatest number of facilities certified or recommended for certification in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs, the U.S. government elite safety programs.

     International Paper operates according to the principles of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. The leadership role in the SFI program exemplifies a commitment to continual planting, growing and harvesting trees while protecting wildlife, plants, soil, air and water quality. All of the company's U.S. forest-land are third-party certified to SFI and ISO 14001 Standards. Certification to the ISO Standard also included all of IP's Russian forestry operations. Additionally, Weldwood of Canada Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of International Paper, was the first in Canada to certify all 20 of its mills and woodlands operations to the ISO 14001 Standard.
    Every acre of International Paper forestland harvested is regenerated either by systematic replanting or by managed natural regeneration. With 16 nurseries and 25 orchards, IP is the worlds largest seedling grower, producing more than 425 million seedlings a year. To date, IP has produced more than eight billion seedlings in the United States alone and has planted its six millionth acre of forestland. The company uses no wood from endangered old growth forests or tropical rainforests.
