William H. “Bill” Jordan will be Anducted into the Auburn Ag Alumni Hall of Honor for his contributions to agribusiness at the association’s annual banquet on Tuesday, February 18, at the AU Hotel and Dixon Conference Center in Auburn, Ala.
Jordan, a long time member of the Alabama Poultry & Egg Association, was inducted the Alabama Poultry Hall of Fame in 1994 in recognition of his dedicated work for Alabama’s poultry industry. He founded and served as president of Jordan Hatchery in For Payne, Ala., which was one of the most automated and technologically advanced hatcheries in the country.
From humble beginnings in Villanow, Ga., Jordan followed the advice of his brothers and some friends and chose to enter the up and coming chicken business. Fresh out of Auburn University, and with his new bride, Emma, by his side, Jordan picked a spot not too far from his native northwest Georgia and began his working life in the poultry industry.
From a small beginning, the early success of the business made it apparent that Jordan soon had to expand. He opened a new hatchery in Rainsville. The two hatcheries functioned well for many years before it was apparent that a totally new operation was necessary. Jordan spearheaded the idea of building a state-of-the-art hatchery in Fort Payne’s industrial park. The facility opened in 1976 and the two older hatcheries were phased out. In the beginning, Jordan’s hatchery in Fort Payne produced 25,000 birds per week. In 1994, the operation was accounting for 1.25 million birds per week.      Jordan has been a member of the Alabama Poultry & Egg Association from the beginning. He served as the association’s president in 1990-91. He is also a past president of the Alabama Hatchery Association. He has served on the Auburn University Relations
Committee and the board of directors for Auburn’s College of Agriculture’s National Alumni Association.
Jordan has served as president of the DeKalb County Auburn Club, president of the Fort Payne Rotary Club, a founder of Landmark Museum and life member of Landmarks of DeKalb County, has received
the Outstanding Young Man Award from Jaycees for distinguished community service, has served on the Fort Payne City Council and is currently serving as mayor of Fort Payne.
Registration for the Alumni banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. with the banquet beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person.
